Umi Sinha - Writing and storytelling

About Me

I was born and grew up in India and have worked as a freelance editor for Orient Longman in Mumbai, and written titles in the ‘Amar Chitra Katha’ series, which retell classic myths, legends and historical events in comic book form. My short stories have been published in magazines and anthologies including Cosmopolitan magazine and a Serpents Tail anthology in 2007. I have an MA in creative writing from the University of Sussex and have taught there on the Certificate in Creative Writing for ten years. Many students from this course have gone on to win prizes, be published, or have plays or stories performed on radio.

In 2006, after doing a performance storytelling course run jointly by the University of Sussex and The School of Storytelling at Emerson College, I became a founder member of The Guest House Storytellers, a storytelling club in Newhaven. I have taken numerous other courses in Performance, Biographical, Corporate and Spontaneous storytelling and now teach storytelling workshops as well as offering performances. I have performed and run storytelling workshops in the UK and for corporate groups, NGOs and the British Council in India. In May 2009 I toured Israel and Palestine with a group of international storytellers working with community groups and performing at the Healing Words Storytelling Peace Festival in Galilee.
